How BGP Autonomous Systems Steer Global Internet Traffic: A Network Engineer's Blueprint
Renjith Pillai

Border Gateway Protocol (BGP-4) is the routing protocol that holds the global internet together. Without BGP, Autonomous Systems (ISPs, cloud providers, corporate backbones) could not exchange network reachability information across public peering points.
Autonomous Systems (AS) and Path Vector Mechanics
The internet is a network of networks called Autonomous Systems (AS), each identified by a unique 16-bit or 32-bit Autonomous System Number (ASN) assigned by Regional Internet Registries (RIRs like APNIC, RIPE, ARIN).
BGP is a Path-Vector Protocol. Unlike interior gateway protocols (OSPF or IS-IS) that calculate metric costs based on interface bandwidth, BGP evaluates reachability based on path policies, AS-PATH attributes, community tags, and LOCAL_PREF values.
