Inflation & Purchasing Power Calculator

Calculate the real purchasing power of money accounting for inflation. Find what ₹1 lakh today will be worth in 10 years, or what ₹10 lakh in 2010 is worth today.

How to Use & Understand This Calculator

Inflation is the sustained increase in the general price level of goods and services over time. As prices rise, each rupee buys fewer goods — this is the erosion of purchasing power. India's historical average inflation (CPI) has been around 5-7% annually, with periods of higher inflation during commodity price shocks.

The calculation is: Future Purchasing Power = Present Amount / (1 + rate)^years. At 6% inflation, ₹1 lakh today will only buy what ₹55,839 buys today after 10 years. Conversely, ₹10 lakh in 2010 (at 6% inflation) is equivalent to ₹17,908 in 2020 money.

Why this matters for investing: Your investment returns must beat inflation to create real wealth. A 7% FD return with 6% inflation gives you only 1% real return. To build wealth, aim for investments that consistently deliver 3-5% above inflation. This is why equity mutual funds (historically 12-15% CAGR) are considered wealth-building tools for long-term goals.

REAL vs NOMINAL returns: Nominal return is the number your bank shows. Real return = (1 + Nominal) / (1 + Inflation) - 1. If your SIP gives 12% and inflation is 6%, your real return is only (1.12/1.06) - 1 ≈ 5.66% — still excellent, but far less than the headline 12%.
